Why Your Low Carb Diet Didn't Work for Fat Loss

Low carb diets are one of the most popular kind of diets out there. People are drawn to this eating plan because it promises quick weight loss, which is exactly what most dieters are looking for. It is a restrictive diet, in that you are not allowed to consume hardly any carbohydrates until you have been on the diet for many weeks. Even then, the amounts are severely restricted.

How is a low carb diet supposed to help you to lose weight if you are allowed unlimited protein and fat? Butter, bacon, steak, heavy whipping cream and most cheeses are “free foods” on this diet. It sounds deliciously decadent, doesn't it? The reason for this is that when you cut your consumption of carbohydrates, the body does not produce as much insulin. This causes the body to use its fat for energy instead. You'll know when this is taking place by a peculiar taste in your mouth, along with very offensive breath.

What's happening here? Well, there are parts of the body that are not able to use fat as an energy source. The red blood cells and the brain are just two of the parts that need a source other than fat, and these are both pretty important to good health, don't you think? So, the body obligingly produces something that can be used, called ketones. When you start to detect a nasty taste, and you notice people are turning away from you as you speak because of your breath, that means the ketones are at work! This is known as being in ketosis.

Ketosis can cause you to feel really horrible. Most people are nauseated and have no energy at all. Normally, this feeling persists every day you are on the diet. If any weight is lost, it is water weight and muscle tissue. The water weight is replaced as soon as you drink something. The muscle tissue is a bit more serious. Muscle tissue works along with your metabolism. Did you know that your muscles are able to burn calories even when you are not doing anything at all? It stands to reason that the loss of some of these muscles means your body won't burn as many calories. This can make controlling your weight quite difficult once you go off the low carb diet.

No one is able to stay on a low carb diet for very long. Can you imagine going the rest of your life without an apple or a freshly baked roll? How about a bowl of cereal or a touch of sugar in your coffee or tea? Devotees of the diet claim that even the popular artificial sweeteners have carbohydrates in each packet, so these are limited to just one or two a day. A limited diet like this can get old pretty fast. Even if you love steak, you wouldn't want to eat it every night for a month, would you?

As far as health goes, low carb diets are extremely hard on the kidneys. There are many reports about people who have suffered permanent kidney damage after spending time on this diet. You're also missing out on a host of vitamins and minerals by eating just two of the food groups.

There is a much safer and saner way for you to lose weight. It's called calorie shifting, and it works! You aren't depriving yourself of the foods you love, yet you still lose weight – up to 8 pounds every 10 days. Calorie Shifting is the diet wave of the future!
