In theory, calorie counting seems so simple, and an ideal way to lose weight. Just keep your calories around 1200 to 1500 calories a day, and you will peel off that layer of fat in a jiffy! If only it were that simple. Calorie counting can actually end up being dangerous, as highly motivated people, usually teens, will keep lowering their daily allotment of calories until it is well below 1000, and they suddenly find themselves with anorexia nervosa.
Unless you only eat out of packages that list the calorie count per serving on them, your calorie count could be way off. Let's say your calorie list says a large apple is 100 calories. How do you know the apple you have isn't an extra large apple? Or a medium apple? Sure, you could weigh your food to make sure you had a 5 and a half ounce apple, the size that is listed for large. But, unless you plan on having no kind of a life at all outside your home, you are not going to weigh every food item you plan on eating! Plus, if you wanted to eat at a friend's house or a restaurant, it would be very difficult to find out the calorie counts for the foods you would eat.
Counting calories makes you focus too much on the food that you are eating. If you want to keep up with the numbers correctly, you are going to have to write down what you eat, the amount, and the calorie count. But the worst thing about calorie counting is this! Calorie counting will eventually slow down your metabolism. When this happens, your body is not going to burn as many calories for energy, so any of them that are in excess will be converted by the body for storage as fat!
The reason for the slowdown is this. A dieter who is determined to lose weight is going to stick pretty closely to the calorie count he or she has determined is proper according to a chart they found either in a book or on the Internet. This is usually a pretty low number. As the days go by, the body gets used to this lowered calorie amount. Actually, it thinks it is starving! So, the body self-adjusts to this number in order to protect itself. And, you don't lose one bit of weight! This is why you hear so many people lamenting that they “Only ate 800 calories a day, and still the scale would not budge!”
There is a much better and also a much healthier way to lose weight than counting calories and starving yourself. Have you heard about calorie shifting? You can read all about it in the Fat Loss Shocker, but in the meantime, just know that it's a fantastic way for you to fool your metabolism! By not taking in the same amount of calories every day, the metabolism does not adjust to any certain level, and you can lose weight!
Since the metabolism burns calories based on what it remembers you consuming for the last two or three days, you can see how this diet is a real winner! You eat around the same number of calories for a bit, then change the numbers around. The metabolism will react by burning the calories you eat as well as burning fat, too!
Counting calories is really one of the worst things that someone can do to themselves. You'll never be able to get down to the size you want unless you adopt a healthy diet and a more natural way of eating. No one eats the exact same number of calories every day, and you don't have to in order to lose weight!
